The Hungry Bear

Since Waitrose opened and Majestic Wine moved from Chapel Allerton, I have to say we have been heading over to Meanwood a lot.

The Hungry Bear is one of a handful of restaurants in Meanwood that have opened recently, so we decided to check it out.

Walking up to the restaurant the first thing you see is the wooden sign and a rather curious looking bear, by his expression I think he is pretty hungry (I know sad attempt at a joke).

The restaurant is pretty snug and there’s no space to stand before your table is ready for drink.

As luck would have it the Hungry Bear is right next to Alfred (another reason to go to Meanwood) so you can always pop in there.

The restaurant used to be an old law firm and has dining on the first two floors. The top floor had been converted into a brewery, many of the beers that were on the drinks menu had been made on site, so we had to sample them.

I went for a stout, it was not heavy at all and had an amazing caramel aftertaste. My second drink was a lovely and (pretty reasonable priced) bottle of Prosecco- shared with the other guests (of course).

Before dinner we had some canapés of which the blackberry with a soft cheese one would have to be the most memorable.

My starter of Chicken and Duck parfait was nice I did find the apple and orange marmalade a little on the sweet side and the dish could have done with a little acidity.

I had serious starter envy as the Beef carpaccio looked and tasted amazing.

I had never heard of Scarborough Woof so when I saw it on the menu I knew I’d have to give it a go.

The Woof was a bit like cod but meatier. The creamy sauce and soft pillows of truffle gnocchi worked perfectly in this dish.

The confit belly Pork which would have been my second choice had just a hint of crackling and that melt in the mouth meat.

For dessert we shared the Yorkshire Parkin, the lime creme fraiche was different and worked well but I am a bit of a purist when it comes to Parkin and would have preferred it with custard.

We enjoyed the meal and service was spot on.

The menu is going to change seasonally so we are looking forward to our next visit to the Hungry Bear.

Just remember to book as they get pretty busy on a Saturday.
