The Hummingbird Kitchen

Last month I was invited to sample a selection of small plates at the re-vamped Hummingbird Kitchen in Chapel Allerton.

The kitchen, now under the leadership of Chef Patron, Greg Lewis, aims to bring fine dining at an affordable price to the North Leeds suburb.

The menu is broken into sections three main sections, Small plates, the Selection of dry aged Yorkshire Beef and English rose veal and The larger main type meals.

We were first served freshly baked bread, this came with balsamic butter and extra virgin rapeseed oil.  On the side there was a North African seed mix (Dukkah) it had a nice mild spice to it but not like a chilli heat.

Then came the Sliders one of mutton, veal and beef served with a homemade relish which was so amazingly zingy and fresh and each pattie had a real distinctive taste the trio worked well together. I was also very excited to see Veal on the menu.

My only criticism would be that the sliders were a bit on the small side, this due to the fact that both the bread baps and patties had been freshly made in the morning.

We were told that once they were in situ they would be a bit bigger, which is all they really needed to make the dish perfect for me.

The 48 hour Seared Ox Tongue was met with a bit of hesitation from the Other Half, but that soon dissipated once we tucked in. This dish is not something that I would have chosen myself but the texture is not what you expect (in a good way) and would happily order again.

We finished off with a Hummingbird Chocolate  Fondant. You know the type, when it just takes one swift move of your fork for the river of chocolate goodness to ooze onto your plate. Heaven.

I do like the idea of small plates, if there were a couple of you sharing you could easily have one of everything on the menu.

This kind of menu really suits itself to the area and I can see myself going back very soon, if only to test out the Cauliflower Cheese, confidently labelled ‘Probably Yorkshire’s best?’ Can’t wait to put that to the test.
