Black Swan Hotel

‘Sunday is the new Saturday’

Well, according to the Black Swan Hotel in Helmsley it is.

The Other Half and I are massive fans of North Yorkshire so when we were looking for a place for our ‘non anniversary’* last month the Black Swan’s great Sunday deal made it to the top of our list.

The ‘Sunday is the new Saturday’ deal comprises of a half bottle of chilled champagne, a six course tasting menu with accompanying wine, an overnight stay and breakfast in the morning. I know, for under £200 we were thinking this deal was a bit too good to be true and the Other Half was on the look out for ‘the catch’.

When we arrived in Helmsley we were greeted by the sunshine, the journey from Leeds was pretty straight forward and very picturesque. The Black Swan Hotel sits at the top of the main town square so it’s very easy to find. The car park is situated at the back of the hotel so, you have to drive up a narrow road to get to it.

Our room was situated on the first floor and to greet us was a teddy bear that sat proudly on our bed!

Once we settled into our room we decided to crack open the champagne that was already on ice and get ready for dinner.

The six dishes (well I think we had five in the end) were amazing and so indulgent, the wines were excellently paired to each dish. With tasting menus, there’s a tendency to rush guest through all the dishes, this was not the case here. The dishes were well timed and due care was taken to my nut allergy.

One of my favorite dishes of the night had to be the pan fried Foie Gras. It was truly delicious, the delicate slice of Foie Gras and the rhubarb made for a really interesting combination, the ginger parkin added a real subtle spice to the dish.

A close second would have to be the Lamb, it was so pink, just the way I like it and mash was creamy, rich and worked perfectly with the morsels of soft lamb shoulder.

The Pineapple Carpaccio dessert was the perfect way to end dinner, its was light and refreshing and I loved the composition on the dish on the plate.

After that much alcohol we both enjoyed our breakfast in the morning and the view we had of the walled garden outside. The Black Swan was well worth the money we paid, as for the catch, there was one. The fact that we want to come back and visit again and soon.

We had a wonderful walk around Helmsley and the Castle before we went home, I would recommend going if only just for a day trip.

*Non anniversary, the date of our very first date, not our wedding anniversary. Its a good excuse for another present.
